Changes to be made/ Evaluation

Overall i think my magazine is good quailty but there are a few things that are letting me down. I will keep the picture the same but the date i used '24th november' i will get rid of as it dosn't look effective and is too big and is using up space i could use for something else. Also the date of the issue looks uneven because the date '2008' looks much bigger than the month 'December' so i will ensure that they are even but still stand out so. When i have made these small changes i will fill up the space on the right with more articles related to college news.

As a whole it is there to represent all students between the age 16-19, at Wyke College, both male and female. The main image on the cover only tends to show the male social group of the rugby team. To represent the females of the college i could have had a photo of perhaps the dance classes or drama classes of them working.
If this college magazine was to be distributed the best place for it to be would be at Wyke College but also could be posted around the local area, for outsiders to know about the college nearby. The audience for the magazine would be the parents of the students who go to the college or parents of those who want to start the college, the way to attract there attentiopn would be sending a copy to people who ring up asking about the college.
I think as a whole the cover has not been well planned out and i could have used more time researching other college magazines, but they key thing is, is that i improve this when doing the main task, learn from my mistakes and produce a better outcome.

College Magazine front cover

The final outcome of my planning for the cover. I chose the colour purple as the main colour as it is the colour of the font for the logo 'Wyke'. The green stripes were to make the cover not look too boring. I took the photo my self at a rugby match, and the opposite team in the black ands white stripes looked like the kit for Hull Fc so i decided to have the main headline as Hull Fc vs Wyke college to play a rugby match against Wyke. I put the date of the event as a plug in the bottom left corner and a jumpline above to direct the audience to the correct opage for the event for more information. Also along the bottom there is the website link for Wyke college. Overall i think that my cover is a success and that it hits the target audience of future college students but i think the only problem with the picture is that it only relates to males, it doesn't show that it includes information for girls until the college contents page.

Planning

Using the help of the magazine i have analysed i am going to create my very own college magazine. I am going to get my own picture and design my own layout, also i have decided to use an existing college name but change their logo for it so that it is all my own idea. I will do a hand drawn plan and also use Desktop Puplisher to create a draft.
Plan of contents page that i have created on Microsoft Publisher.
Plan for front cover that i produced on Microsoft Publisher.

Conventions

Conventions are like rules and are what creates a magazine front cover. Depending on the genre of magazines effects the way they are laid out. All magazines will have the same conventions.
All covers will have a Title/Masthead, this is what shows the name of the magazine for example this usually is positioned along the top and is bigger than any other font on the page. They can also have a strapline beneath the title.
A college magazine will also have a large picture, most of the time it tends to cover the whole page and is the main attraction. The image will relate to what the magazine is called and what will be inside. The idea fo the photo is not to look too posed but to look natural.
There will be a logo of some sort of sponsor for the magazine, usually along the bottom of the magazine, quite small but still noticeable. For example .
Sometimes along side of the logo it will have a website you can visit, usually for more information for example .
In some spaces theres will be what is known as 'plugs' they give you a brief insight of the content and give you guidelines on to where to find it. There will also be a date of the issue, so it is possible for an update and get the next months issue for more imformation on different events.
As i have noticed college/school magazines aren't as busy as a normal magazines such as 'Heat' and 'Nuts'. They are kept simple so that they are easy to read and gets straight to the point on what the magazine is about.

Analysis of two other magazines

I now have found two other magazines, which share the same genre of being a school magazine but are different because of there conventions and context on the covers. The magazine is called Boarding School, therefor is about boarding schools and the other is called Prep School and is the magazine of preparatory school world.

Magazine one Magazine two

The both have similar layouts, they both have large, easy to read Mastheads and a main picture, including logo's and captions but both have the same conventions.
Underneath the masthead of magazine one it says The magazine of Boarding school association, which lets the audience know more about the magazine. It is not at easy to read as it is in a smaller font but this is because the Title is more important therefor needs to stand out more. For magazine two it has 'The magazine of the preparatory school world' down the left side of the page not underneath the Masthead. It is slightly more noticeable than the other magazines sub-heading and it is on a grey background and is in a white font.

Both magazines have two large pictures. The Boarding School Association has a picture of three boys walking outside and they appear to be wearing a sport kit of some sort, this could suggest it has information on singe sex boarding schools or specialised school for example a Sport boarding school. The Prep School magazine has a large picture of a boy playing drums, suggests preparation for musical instruments, doesn't really show what else it can contain inside. Also below the picture it has a caption for the picture which says 'Prep School photographer of the year 2008,Alex Brindley,of Birchfield School'. The logo for Boarding School Association is in the bottom left corner. It is easy to notice the logo on the cover but doesn't take the attraction away from the title or picture.
This shows that same genre magazines can have a similar layout and conventions that create the look for the magazines similar yet different. Both magazines are simple and get straight to the point of what they are trying to portray.

Denotation/Connotation

Our first task we were given to do was to compare two 'secondary teachers' magazines, using denotation and connotation. The idea is to show the differences between the same magazine and how they vary each month. At a quick glance I've already noticed that they both have the same layout, a row of plugs at the top, name of the magazine, large picture with a heading and website and date along the bottom.

Secondary Teachers, Magazine one

The title of the magazine is Secondary Teachers, the font large and easy to read. The colour of the font is green fading to blue from the top to the bottom. The word secondary is larger then the word teachers, to emphasise that it's for a secondary school. The title stands our more because the background is white.

Along the top of the magazine there are a row of three plugs. The first plug says 'My Masters inspired me', which is in a red font and is easy to read. The second plug says 'The playground that gets girls moving' with a picture of girls looking like their having fun which links to the quote. The font once again is easy to read but this time is the colour pink. The final plug says 'Super snappy lesson starters', in a clear red font just like the first plug. The pattern along the top is red, pink with picture and red.

The main picture on the cover is a picture of a tray with gingerbread men on, being held by a student in uniform. The image is a close up of mainly the tray but you can see bits of the student. Also i noticed that the the the two gingerbread men are different in an obvious way of that one is a girl and the other is a boy. There is a a title for the picture which says 'Cook with me' in a white font with 'How schools can make lessons tasty' also in a white font but smaller than the cook with me font. I think that the picture is suggesting secondary schools have cooking lessons for students for boys and girls.

Finally along the bottom there is a logo for the department for children, schools and families. The logo for it is a rainbow and it is in the bottom left corner. Also there is the date of the issue followed by a website address 'www.teachernet.gov.uk' in the bottom right corner.

Secondary Teachers, magazine two

This second magazine has the exact same layout as the other one. Plugs along the top, also red, pink and red but this time the last plug has the miniture picture, title of magazine, large picture with title, logo for department for children, schools and families and a date with website.
Although the plugs along the top have the same colour theme, they obviuosly say a different thing because it's a different issue. The first plug in red says ' Your need-to-know guide for next term', the second plug in pink says '15 free fantastic ideas for summer' and the final plug once again is red and it says 'Why the Fonz is back to school' and the picture to go with it is a picture of Arthour Fonzerelli.
The main picture is also different, it is a picture of two boys holding booklets saying arsenal on them, with an arsnel shirt behind them but instead of it saying their name one says numeracy and the other says litaracy. This links with the title for this 'Playing to learn' because its linking learning and football together. Underneath the mian title for the picture it says 'How football can help improve their Maths and English skills' which once again links to the picture.
Then once again along the bottom there is the logo for the department for schools, children and families on the bottom left and the Date of the issue (July 2008) and the teachernet website along side it.

Introduction

In Media Studies we are to produce two print artefacts. Our Preliminary exercise is to produce a front page of a new school/college magazine. We must have a mock-up aswell as a final out come. This is due on 7th November. The main task is to create the front page and a double page sread of a new music magazine. It all has to be an oringinal design produced by me. This is due on 19th December. The presentation of my work will be presented on my Blogger account and podcast or presentation using PowerPoint. At the end of the topic i must create an evalutaion
